82年の前作『復讐の叫び』で念願の全米完全制覇! 
まさにプリーストの絶頂期である84年1月に満を持して発表した9thオリジナル・アルバム。
全米18位(プラチナム獲得)、全英19位を記録。
日本では全作品中1,2位を争う名盤、人気作である。
プロデューサー/エンジニアは、79年「イン・ジ・イースト」(日本公演ライヴ)以降80年代の全作品を手がけるトム・アロム(ブラック・サバス初期3作品なども手掛ける)。そのトム・アロムがこの30周年記念盤でもリマスターを手掛けている。
本作の代表曲は「フリーホイール・バーニング」(Freewheel Burning)、「叛旗の下に」(Some Heads Are Gonna Roll )、「死の番人」(The Sentinel)など。 
ジャケットに描かれた機械獣は“メタリアン (Metallian)。そのジャケットは30周年仕様の新アートワークとなって登場。8面デジパック、豪華ブックレットなど30周年仕様となる。
そして、本作最大の魅力は、なんと言ってもCD2/CD3に渡るライヴ音源。
彼らの絶頂期である84年5月カリフォルニアのロングビーチ・アリーナ公演を完全収録!
